Celebrating
Cinema
The brief for the 2025 IFP Design Challenge invited participants to create digital illustrations that paid homage to the rich heritage of Indian cinema — whether through recreating memorable scenes, portraying beloved actors, or capturing the spirit of a cinematic era.
Approach
I chose to focus on two iconic films and dance sequences that defined my childhood. - Dola re Dola (Devdas, 2002), and Chaiyya Chaiyya (Dil Se, 1998).
These are the kinds of visuals that instantly trigger recognition: the pose, the expressions, the scenery — and suddenly you’re searching for the soundtrack and replaying the songs.
I was drawn to the exaggerated emotion, spectacle, and visual richness of 90s and early aughts Indian cinema posters.
My approach was to reinterpret these cinematic moments using saturated colour palettes, texture, movement, and layered compositions to recreate the joy, drama, and instant familiarity of the films that shaped an entire generation.
